The SDGs were agreed upon in 2015 by all UN member states and consist of 17 goals and 169 targets for the world to become a better place by 2030.
In 2017 the Hempel Foundation became a part of the establishment of UNLEASH - a global innovation lab, where new ways of thinking will meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In 2018 the Hempel Foundation was a sponsor of the education track as part of the SDG #4 - Quality education.
What makes UNLEASH unique, is the creation of a global lab and a platform fully dedicated to the new SDGs, where talents can add value directly and access a unique ecosystem of corporations, think-thanks, foundations, non-profits, angel investors, etc.
Although we are witnessing a growing share of the world’s children attending school, there are far too many children who do not obtain proficiency in basic skills such as reading, writing and math.
According to UNESCO, there is an annual financing gap of USD 39 billion that must be filled in order to provide education of high quality in low and lower middle income countries. This financing gap along with other barriers means that it is necessary to think differently, and to leverage technology and other innovative solutions to give more children access to high quality education in the most effective way.
To achieve this we need to mobilize talented people around the world and inspire them to step up to the challenge of achieving education for all as well as the remaining SDGs. And that is exactly what the Hempel Foundation believes UNLEASH can do. It brings together some of the most talented people from all corners of the world and is a catalyst for development of new ideas of which some may have the potential to leapfrog the development towards empowering children to learn.
