Hempel Foundation Annual Report 2019

In 2019 the Hempel Foundation donated a little more than EUR 21 million and opened a new chapter for us in sustaining the planet's biodiversity.

Education

Through partnerships and a focus on innovation, we create sustainable change that enables children living in poverty to learn and develop their potential.

In 2019 we started new work in Guatemala, Bolivia, Rwanda and South Africa. Furthermore, we made commitments to start new work in Madagascar, Uganda, Peru and Nepal from 2020. We currently have 6 partners working in 16 countries.

Science

CoaST (The Hempel Foundation Coatings Science and Technology Centre) opened in 2017 at DTU (Technical University of Denmark) and is envisioned to become a globally leading centre for research, innovation and education in sustainable coatings technologies.

Landmarks in 2019 for CoaST include a new sustainability strategy, a new test site and extended international collaborations. There is currently a scientific staff of 35 professors, post-doctorates and PhD students exploring new ways to make surface protection more efficient and more environmentally sustainable.

Nature

Our mission is to sustain some of the planet’s most biologically rich woodlands through partnerships with a shared focus on sustainability.
In 2019, we initiated three projects with two partners that will help sustain key biodiversity hotspots covering 177,000 hectares across Uganda, Ecuador and Madagascar.

Applications

We donated EUR 3.2 million in 2019 to 54 organisations that applied for support.
